Life and death, light and dark, spirit and flesh-on Wormwood Island, the lines are always blurred. For Anne Merchant, who has been thrust back into this eerily secretive world, crossing the line seems inevitable, inescapable, destined.

Now, as Ben finds himself battling for the Big V and Teddy reveals the celestial plan in which Anne is entwined, Anne must choose: embrace her darkly powerful connection to a woman known as Lilith and, in doing so, save the boy she loves...or follow a safer path that is sure to lead to Ben's destruction at the hands of dark leaders. Hoping the ends will justify the means, Anne starts down the slippery slope into the underworld, intent on exploring the dark to find the light. But as the lure of Lilith proves powerfully strong, will Anne save others-only to lose herself?

The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant (V, #1) The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant (The V Trilogy, #2)

ALICIA: Hi Joanna, I'm thrilled to have you here today on Addicted Readers! :)

Yay! Awesome to be here, Alicia. Thanks. J

ALICIA: 1.) Before we get started, can you share with us a little bit about your upcoming release, THE
WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT, for readers who may be unfamiliar with it?

JOANNA: Sure. The Wicked Awakening of Anne Merchant is the second book in the V Trilogy, which started with The Unseemly Education of Anne Merchant. In this book, Anne is pulled back to the eerie, misty Wormwood Island and the exclusive Cania Christy Preparatory Academy. She’s been told that that her deceased, angelic mother is depending on her to do the dirty work of destroying a devil. No biggie, right? Except that, to get the job done, Anne’s going to have to face some terrible truths about herself and risk losing the boy she loves.

ALICIA: 2.) How was the idea for your upcoming novel, THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT created, and did it turn out to be what you planned on, or did it change a lot from your initial idea?

JOANNA: Lord only knows where ideas come from, but I’ve had the story of Anne Merchant loosely plotted for years. The Wicked Awakening went where I expected it to go, but the path there was different than I’d planned on.

For example, Anne’s relationship with Ben is moving in a direction that is outside of what I’d planned with the first book. I’m writing the third and final book right now, and I’m still on the fence about how I’ll tie that relationship up.

ALICIA: 3.) What was the most challenging, and the most enjoyable aspect of writing THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT, and why?

JOANNA: I’m writing about a very grounded-in-reality girl who’s been thrust into a world of insanely wealthy people and the devils that rule them. Like, we’re not in Kansas anymore. The challenge is in keeping Anne walking the line between both worlds when she could easily fall to the reality side or the fantasy side.

I know Anne the way you might know someone with whom you shared a womb. So I feel equipped to stay true to who she is at the same time I worry I’m too close to her to let her become the woman she wants to be. That’s tough.

ALICIA: 4.) Can you tell us five random things about you?

JOANNA: Ha! You asked for random:

I was a runaway bride. A week before I was to be married, I realized I couldn’t go through with it. It was a terribly timed realization, but I suppose the hardest decisions to make are also the ones most often delayed. (Which is why deadlines are so crucial.)

My sister kissed Bono. Okay, that’s not about me, but it’s cool. Actually, the way that ties back to me is that my sister invited me to go with her the night she went stalking Bono, and I said, and I quote: “Even Bono needs to sleep.” Evidently, he doesn’t.
I’m the middle of seven kids. My two youngest brothers are step brothers, and we don’t talk much these days. But I grew up the belly button of the family: stuck in the middle and easily forgotten. BTW, the forgetableness (not a word) of being a middle child comes in rather handy in one’s teen years…

I can’t swim a stroke. I never learned as a child, and I’ve spent the last 30+ years aware of the fact that water can kill me. It’s really hard to chase that idea out of your head when it’s essentially tattooed to your brain, so my fear of water – or, better, of death by water – keeps me up on the beach, reading a book.

I build tools for writers. Years ago, I cofounded a service called Page99Test, which helped readers discover new books by letting them read through the 99th page of a book, which writers and publishers could upload. Today, I’m working with a fab engineer on a solution for organizing one’s ideas and turning them into an outline, which will be particularly good for writers of fantasy novels that rely on world-building and have tonnnnnnnns of details to track.

ALICIA: 5.) Can you tell us a little bit about our main character, Anne, and what we can expect from her in THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT?

JOANNA: Anne Elizabeth Merchant is a high-school junior who’s excelled in school all her life and who’s lived in the shadows as the daughter of a lowly mortician in the wealthiest zip code in America. She’s so used to moving quietly through life that she’s thrown when, at Cania Christy, she becomes the subject of much interest from day one.

In The Unseemly Education, Anne was busy playing catch-up because everyone was keeping a secret – or, rather, many secrets – from her. Now in The Wicked Awakening, she is more assertive. She asks hard questions and doesn’t settle for soft answers. She goes after what she wants. And she makes extraordinarily gutsy decisions to help the ones she loves. Or that’s what she thinks. It may be that Anne’s instincts are not quite what she thinks they are.

As for what Anne looks like: she’s like Taylor Swift (in her big-hair days). Tall, blonde and pretty, but not quite as pixie-like as Swift. Anne’s built tall and broad.

ALICIA: 6.) If you could describe THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT in 10 words, what would they be?

JOANNA: Hell is empty and all the devils are here. ~Shakespeare

ALICIA: Joanna, it's been a blast having you here today! I'm excited to finally read THE WICKED AWAKENING OF ANNE MERCHANT!!
JOANNA: I’m excited, too! Thanks for having me on your blog, Alicia, and keep up the awesome work. Hope you <3 br="" it="">
