Blog Tour: Q&A + Giveaway: A Gathering Of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

Welcome to my stop in A GATHERING OF SHADOW by

A Gathering of Shadows (Shades of Magic, #2)
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy
Published February 23rd, 2016
Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.
In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

What was the inspiration behind creating the different color London's, and which was the most thought provoking and/or fun to write?
Honestly, the first inspiration for the color system was so that I myself would have a way to differentiate between them, since I wanted them all to be called London. It made sense, then, that Kell would need a system, too, since Black London already had its name, and ordinary London was rather Grey, the other two—Red and White—were pretty logical, since Red has the crimson river, and White is stripped of most color. As for which was the most fun to write, that would definitely be Red, with its lush palette and decadent lifestyle. Because our primary lens is royal society, I get to write opulent galas as well as taverns and markets.

Victoria is the product of a British mother, a Beverly Hills father, and a southern upbringing. Because of this, she has been known to say "tom-ah-toes," "like," and "y'all."

She also tells stories.

She loves fairy tales, and folklore, and stories that make her wonder if the world is really as it seems.

Dating isn’t easy when you’re in the middle of a blood feud.

Anastasia Vila’s family can turn into swans, but just once she’d like them to turn into responsible adults.

After hundreds of years, they still cling to the blood feud with the Renard family. No one remembers how it started in the first place—but foxes and swans just don’t get along.

Vilas can only transform into their swan shape after they have fallen in love for the first time, but between balancing schoolwork, family obligations, and the escalating blood feud, Ana’s got no time for love. The only thing keeping her sane is her best friend, Pierce Kent.

But when Pierce kisses Ana, everything changes.

Is what Pierce feels for her real, or a byproduct of her magic? Can she risk everything for her best friend? And when the family feud spirals out of control, Ana must stop the fight before it takes away everything she loves.

Including, maybe…Pierce.

This Entangled Teen Crave book contains language, violence, and lots of kissing. Warning: it might induce strong feelings of undeniable attraction for your best friend.

TOPIC # 1:

The path at becoming an author.

The Care and Feeding of your Authorly Self:

Here’s the good news: there is no secret handshake to getting published.

Here’s the bad news: there is no secret handshake to getting published.

Sometimes the path is a road, a bramble-trail, a river…sometimes it’s all of these things. Other wriets might leave trail markings or breadcrumbs or lamps to help you out but mostly the only right way to write, is the way that works for you.

That said--- sometimes you have to remind yourself that being a writer has nothing to do with sales numbers and bestseller lists. Those are things you may not have very much control over. What you do have control over is writing your next book—and making it better.

Sometimes a social media break is necessary.

Reading more books is always necessary.

And cake.

Always cake.

Behind the worldbuilding...

I have written about vampires, fae, ghosts, werewolves, and witches. I love writing paranormal stories and I was itching for something different—something magical I hadn’t yet explored.

I went through an encyclopedia of magical creatures searching for inspiration (inspiration isn’t mail-order—sometimes you have to hunt!) and swan maidens jumped out at me.

I could see Ana and her family, and the quirky rituals required by their magic, and mostly, I could hear Ana’s wry opinion about it all. I also wanted to explore the way magic might make love even more complicated.

And Love Me, Love Me Not takes place in Stratford, Ontario, mostly because I really love Stratford, Ontario. But also because magic and family feuds and swans and foxes feel very Shakespearean to me. And in Stratford every spring, they process the swan down to the river with great pomp and ceremony. And bagpipes. It’s kind of seriously awesome.

Character Profile(s): Anastasia

Holland Roden would make a great Ana! She’s gorgeous and spunky and can deliver a really great sarcastic glance.

Blond. Not just blond, magic-blond. It’s a thing.

magic spells, gardening, making herbals teas

Anastasia comes from a family of swan shapeshifters who only get their feather cloaks once they’ve fallen in love for the first time. She’s a little worried that she might never get hers, but she’s even more worried that she won’t have time to finish her homework and graduate high school. Magical blood feuds take up a lot of time, after all.

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream. Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with her husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.

Blog Tour: Excerpt + Giveaway: The Black Lotus by Claire Warner

The Black Lotus
Claire Warner
Release Date: June 29th 2014

....though I would dearly love to play court to you, I would hurt you more than any other.

It is 1752.

The year that will change the life of heiress Melissa De Vire. As she makes her first fumbling steps into society, she meets the handsome young cad Justin Lestrade and his world tears her perceptions apart. For Justin is more than he appears and his secrets and enemies are manifold. Drawn irresistibly to him, she finds herself sinking into a realm of feuds, magic and old curses and her life will never again be the same.

"Justin?" He turned as she spoke, "I think you should pursue Melissa De Vire."

He dropped what he had been holding and walked towards her.

"What?" Utter shock permeated his tones and he stared down at her as though he could not believe what he had just heard. "You must be mad."

"No, just practical." Unconcerned by the anger on his face, Emily reached down and pulled the gold bracelet back onto her wrist. "You like her, that much is obvious and she seems to have some interest in you, despite her transparent denials."

For a long moment, Justin said nothing, stunned by the words that were coming out of Emily’s mouth. "Haven’t you just convinced me that this existence is so much hell, that you would lie with someone you don’t care for just to rid yourself of it? Why would you ask me to pursue someone I couldn’t be with? Do you hate me that much?"

Emily turned away and sat down in one of the chairs. "I don’t hate you Justin, but if you don’t take her and make her yours you will regret it." She picked up her bonnet and began pulling at the flowers set into it. "Alistair already knows about her, give it a little time and she will be linked with us. I’d much rather you drag her along rather than leave her to be fodder for John."

"So how does my brother know about Melissa?" Justin’s voice was dangerously quiet as he stood opposite her. "Have you stirred the pot again?" He turned and slammed his fist into the wall. "I thought you were past these petty games. Real people are at stake."

"Yes." She stood and faced him. "Real people are at stake and if you do not act this time, John will merely take her from you in the same way he took Anna." She grabbed his fist and brushed the drops of blood from the knuckles. "Do you not realise yet that there is nothing that you can do to hide her from him."

"I’ve spoken to her once." He hoped that she did not see through the lie, "And that has been all. God curse it Emily, she may only be intrigued, do not turn this into a grand love affair on the basis of one conversation." He pulled his hand free and seized the back of her neck. "If you start this, you’d better be prepared to face the consequences."

Emily laughed in his face. "Don’t threaten me darling, I won’t take it." Her hand snaked around his wrist and she pressed hard on the joints, causing him to gasp in pain. "I will not spend the next few decades suffering from your ill temper. Don’t forget love, that I know you almost as well as you know yourself."

Justin allowed his hand to drop from her skin and whispered. "Then why would push this? I am interested yes, but I know that I can’t have her. John need only know that I flirted with her, as I do with many women."

"I push because John will know regardless. He has his spies and he will find out."

When I was a child, I made up games and characters when my sister and I played with dolls. As I grew older, I would make up scenarios and scenes, fully intending to write them down but never finding the time. In my late teens, I discovered the world of role playing and settled into an avid ‘geeky’ life of D&D, comics, sci-fi and fantasy fiction. Years passed and I finally gave voice to the stories in my head. I write romance, fantasy, action and adventure. I love tales of steampunk and history, tales of magical powers and dark curses lurking in the shadows. Though The Black Lotus is not my first attempt at a novel, it is the first I have finished.

And some fun facts about me:
I sew.
My favourite Disney film is Atlantis.
I’ve been a film extra and stood 5 feet away from Sam Rockwell.
Babylon 5 is my fave sci-fi show.
I cried at the end of Toy Story 3.

The path at becoming an author.

Hi, thanks for having me here to talk about Temper and the path to becoming an author. It wasn’t a fast journey at the time but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I’ve always written, for as long as I can remember and I would write stories even if no one read them.

It’s important for me to be doing this at first for myself. I write the stories I’d like to read and that keeps me going. I suffered many rejections on my path to publication but all of them taught me something. None of them made me stop writing.

That’s pretty important – it’s hard to publish a story if you aren’t writing any. Lots of things go into that. You need the right people around you for support/feedback and encouragement and you need to step away at time. You need to be healthy enough to be able to create. Look after yourself!

Remember there will always be doubts. There will be times where it seems all too hard – don’t give up. Also remember that not everyone is your reader. Some of my friends don’t read sci-fi and never will and it has nothing to do with my story.

Editing is so important. Don’t skip this step – please.

Read widely and as often as you can. It helps to know what is happening but also to refill the well. It teaches and heals. Reading is awesome.

Lastly, and most importantly – love it. If you don’t, who will?

Thanks again for letting me visit.

Happy reading!

I always wanted to write. I’ve worked as a lab assistant, a pizza delivery driver and a high school teacher but I always pursued my first dream of creating stories. Now, I live with my family near Adelaide, halfway between the city and the sea, and am lucky to spend my days (and nights) writing young adult fiction.

Asleep for a hundred years, awoken by a kiss, Aurora’s life was supposed to be a fairytale. But since discovering that loyalty to the crown and loyalty to her country are two very different things, Aurora knows she can only dream of happily ever after. Once the enchanted princess, savior of her people, she is now branded a traitor.

Aurora is determined to free her home from the king’s tyrannical rule, even if it means traveling across the sea to the kingdom of the handsome and devious Prince Finnegan—someone who seems to know far more about her magic than he should. However, Finnegan’s kingdom has perils of its own, and any help he gives Aurora will come at a price.

As Aurora and Finnegan work together to harness her power—something so fiery and dangerous that is as likely to destroy those close to Aurora as it is to save them—she begins to unravel the mysteries surrounding the curse that was placed on her over a century before…and uncover the truth about the destiny she was always meant to fulfill.
