THE REQUIEM RED
by Brynn Chapman
YA Historical Urban Fantasy
April 5th 2016 by Month9Books

Patient Twenty-nine.

A monster roams the halls of Soothing Hills Asylum. Three girls dead. 29 is endowed with the curse…or gift of perception. She hears messages in music, sees lyrics in paintings. And the corn. A lifetime asylum resident, the orchestral corn music is the only constant in her life.

Mason, a new, kind orderly, sees 29 as a woman, not a lunatic. And as his belief in her grows, so does her self- confidence. That perhaps she might escape, might see the outside world.

But the monster has other plans. The missing girl's share one common thread...each was twenty-nine's cell mate.

Will she be next?

Synesthesia and Requiem Red

My character in Requiem Red, Jane, has synesthesia—which is a combining of the senses.

Some of these people with this neural variant taste shapes, hear colors, and a massive variety of sensory pairings. Jane is a composer in the 1800’s and she sees musical notes in color.

To make Jane’s situation more understandable…remember fantasia? https://youtu.be/2DX2yVucz24

This is how Jane thinks…not only in music, but color as well.

There are some interesting theories in psychology that at times, synesthesia may be induced with the loss of one sense…such as going blind or deaf—so that another sense refines or sharpens to produce the synesthesia.

Here is a link to cognitive neurological researcher, Jamie Ward.
http://gocognitive.net/interviews/can-synesthesia-be-acquired

Although this would be plausible for Jane…as she was denied the comfort of touch for many years (admitted to the asylum at the tender age of three) Her synesthesia was present from birth.

Jane is very brave…and has had to be—one can imagine the world of the asylum for a three year old…with no one to speak for them, protect them. An orderly enters her life, and changes her perspective that she might leave the asylum and survive in the outside world.

He makes her believe in herself. #itmeanscourageItmeansYou

But someone or something does not want Jane to leave…

Will she make it out alive?

Born and raised in western Pennsylvania, Brynn Chapman is the daughter of two teachers. Her writing reflects her passions: science, history and love—not necessarily in that order. In real life, the geek gene runs strong in her family, as does the Asperger’s syndrome. Her writing reflects her experience as a pediatric therapist and her interactions with society’s downtrodden. In fiction, she’s a strong believer in underdogs and happily-ever-afters. She also writes non-fiction and lectures on the subjects of autism and sensory integration and is a medical contributor to online journal The Age of Autism.
