Destiny is pre-determined. It is strictly monitored. It is unchangeable.

Or is it?

Madden’s life is a whirlwind of privilege and perks. Born into the elite Purple ring, she is fated to be a Minister of the Seven. Although her position comes with the burden of great responsibility, she’s nothing if not confident in her future. After all, Destiny Specialists have determined how she will fulfill her life's purpose, and they are never wrong.

Her classmate Dax, an Ash, is clinging to the opposite end of the spectrum. While everyone around her knows what destiny awaits them, Dax’s fate is…missing. Isolated and ignored, she refuses to let her lack of status define her.

After a stunning twist of fate, Dax and Madden’s paths intertwine in ways neither could have possibly imagined. The two are forced to question their own past, present and future as they realize who they are is not necessarily who they were meant to be.

ASH, the first book in the Destined series, is an unforgettable journey into an alternate future which will leave readers wondering just how much we can control our own fate.

Destiny is calling. Will you fight for yours?

ALICIA: Hi Shani, I'm so excited to have you stop by today for an interview! :)

I’m really excited to be here! Thank you for having me.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about ASH, for readers who might be unfamiliar with it?

It takes place in a world like our own—with one major difference. Everyone finds out their destiny—their main purpose in life—at birth. If they fail to complete their destiny or try to fight it, they’re put to death. ASH follows two girls. One with the best destiny possible, the other the worst. A major twist of fate forces them together, and they must decide how much they’re willing to risk for the people they love.

2. Can you share with us a little bit about our main characters Madden and Dax, and what we can expect from them?

Madden has grown up with silver (or in the case of our book—purple) spoon in her mouth. Everything has always been handed to her and people flock to her side. Dax is the opposite. She had it tough. With the exception of her family and a few others, most people don’t want anything to do with her.
Both girls have pre-conceived notions about how they’re supposed to act, who they’re supposed to be, what’s right and wrong, and through the course of the book, you’re really going to see them questioning themselves and doing things that would have shocked their former selves.

3. What would you say was the most challenging aspect of writing ASH and why?

One of the most challenging parts was also one of the most rewarding—writing with another person. You might have certain ideas that are completely opposite of your co-writer, and you have to find a way to come up with something you both love. But what’s really cool about it is you have another person, whose work and talent you respect, to bounce ideas off and who brings in a whole different outlook. We wound up with a world and characters bigger than either of us ever imagined because we created them together.

4. What was your most memorable moment of writing ASH, and why?

For me it goes back to the very beginning, before we even planned on starting a novel together. Darci and I were chatting and before we knew it, we had come up with a book idea. We kept throwing out ideas and building on what the other said. We actually came up with the ending to ASH that very first day. We both got chills at the same moment and knew we had to write this book ASAP!

5. Can you tell us 5 random things about you?

- I used to do a lot of acting and improv and have to plans to do it again someday.

- In addition to the book writing, I work for a TV news station. I got the job by randomly calling and asking if they had any openings.

- I hate it when people are late – it’s a total pet peeve of mine.

- I love a book that has a good mystery, but I can’t fall asleep until I know what happens at the end. There have been a lot of nights of missed sleep.

- I believe in going after your dreams, and that if you keep at it, you’ll succeed.

Shani, it was a blast having you here today for the ASH Blog Tour. All the best of luck for ASH'S release day!! :)

Thank you so much!

Hi Darci, thanks for stopping by today to visit us at Addicted Readers! :)

Thanks so much for the invitation – this is my first novel, and I’m so excited to be talking about it!

1. How was the idea for the ASH series created?

Shani and I were talking about destiny one night. More just joking around—what if we’d been destined to be rockstars kind of stuff. But then we started asking more serious questions. What would happen to our world if people knew what they were supposed to do from day one? Would that make things better? Would people be happier? By the end of the night we’d come up with a plot twist that gave us both chills. That was it – we decided to write a book together.

2. In ten words, can you describe ASH?

Destiny defines who you are and who you will become.

3. Can you tell us 5 random things about you?

- I’m originally from Kansas – go Jayhawks!

- I’m afraid of zombie movies. And slasher flicks. To be honest, anything that falls into the horror category will keep me up at night. Overactive imagination, maybe? J

- I once worked in a carnival in Sydney, Australia

- I’m a graphic designer by trade

- Fantasy is my favorite genre to read, and Brandon Sanderson is my biggest writer crush

4. Can you tell us what was the most helpful advice you ever received about writing or anything bookish?

I really love this quote by E.L. Doctorow: “Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.” That sums it up for me beautifully – you just have to move forward, knowing that you’ll reach the end eventually.

5. What can we expect from this series looking forward?

I think Dax and Madden will surprise you. Shani and I are in the preliminary stages of writing for ULTRAVIOLET and we’re both very excited about it. We’re mixing up the formula – this isn’t going to be a typical Book 2 from a structural standpoint.

Darci, it was fun chatting with you today, and I'm so looking forward to ASH'S release day soon!!

Back atcha, and thank you!
