After a brutal nuclear war, the United States was left decimated. A small group of survivors eventually banded together, but only after more conflict over which family would govern the new nation. The Westfalls lost. Fifty years later, peace and control are maintained by marrying the daughters of the losing side to the sons of the winning group in a yearly ritual.

This year, it is my turn.

My name is Ivy Westfall, and my mission is simple: to kill the president’s son—my soon-to-be husband—and restore the Westfall family to power.

But Bishop Lattimer is either a very skilled actor or he’s not the cruel, heartless boy my family warned me to expect. He might even be the one person in this world who truly understands me. But there is no escape from my fate. I am the only one who can restore the Westfall legacy.

Because Bishop must die. And I must be the one to kill him…

  PLAYLIST
Like many writers, I always listen to music when I write. But I don’t necessarily pick songs because they directly relate to what I’m writing, which might put me in the minority. For me, it’s more important that they have the right rhythm and style; I want to listen to songs I love but that don’t pull my brain away from writing. I generally make a playlist of 10-15 songs and I listen to them on a constant loop the entire time I’m drafting a manuscript. They become the background noise in my head that both tunes out the outside world and triggers my brain that it’s time to write. For Ivy, my playlist was:

The Story--Brandi Carlile

Demons--Imagine Dragons

She’s the One--Robbie Williams

High Hopes--Kodaline

The Lightning Strike--Snow Patrol

Slow Dancing in a Burning Room--John Mayer

Skinny Love--Birdy

Ride--Lana Del Rey

Hear Me--Imagine Dragons

King and Lionheart--Of Monsters and Men

This Land is Mine--Dido

I don’t have this song on my Ivy playlist, but whenever I hear “Next to Me,” by Emeli Sande, I always think of Ivy and Bishop. The lyrics fit their relationship so well, especially this section:

When the skies are grey and all the doors are closing

And the rising pressure makes it hard to breathe

When all I need's a hand to stop the tears from falling

I will find him, I’ll find him next to me

When the end has come and buildings falling down fast

When we’ve spoilt the land and dried up all the seas

When everyone has lost their heads around us

You will find him, you’ll find him next to me

Amy Engel was born in Kansas and after a childhood spent bouncing between countries (Iran, Taiwan) and states (Kansas; California; Missouri; Washington, D.C.), she settled in Kansas City, Missouri, where she lives with her husband and two kids. Before devoting herself full-time to motherhood and writing, she was a criminal defense attorney, which is not quite as exciting as it looks on TV. When she has a free moment, she can usually be found reading, running, or shoe shopping. The Book of Ivy is her debut YA novel.
