The only thing bigger than the world is fear.

Lucy’s life by the pond has always been full. She has water and friends, laughter and the love of her adoptive mother, Lynn, who has made sure that Lucy’s childhood was very different from her own. Yet it seems Lucy’s future is settled already—a house, a man, children, and a water source—and anything beyond their life by the pond is beyond reach.

When disease burns through their community, the once life-saving water of the pond might be the source of what’s killing them now. Rumors of desalinization plants in California have lingered in Lynn’s mind, and the prospect of a “normal” life for Lucy sets the two of them on an epic journey west to face new dangers: hunger, mountains, deserts, betrayal, and the perils of a world so vast that Lucy fears she could be lost forever, only to disappear in a handful of dust.

In this companion to Not a Drop to Drink, Mindy McGinnis thrillingly combines the heart-swelling hope of a journey, the challenges of establishing your own place in the world, and the gripping physical danger of nature in a futuristic frontier.

Not a Drop to Drink (Not a Drop to Drink, #1)  In a Handful of Dust (Not a Drop to Drink, #2)

ALICIA: Hi Mindy, I'm thrilled to have you here today! :)

ALICIA: 1.) Before we get started, can you share with us a little bit about your upcoming release IN A HANDFUL OF DUST, for readers who may be unfamiliar with it?

Sure! DUST takes place ten years after the events in NOT A DROP TO DRINK. While it’s a companion novel rather than a sequel, readers will be better informed about the world if they read DRINK first. Technically you could read them both as standalones though! In DUST, the home pond has become infected with polio. Lynn & Lucy (now a teen) have to find a new water source based on Eli’s information from DRINK that California and desalinization plants could possibly be a haven. With this slip of information, the two set out on foot to walk across the country.

ALICIA: 2. Why did you decide to have IN A HANDFUL OF DUST the Companion novel, and not the sequel from the same prescriptive from the first book?

MINDY: I wanted to show two different types of survivors. Lynn is kick-ass, harsh, and reflective of the world around her. Lucy is kind, funny, and full of hope. You can be the second thing and still survive in the post-apocalyptic world, which is something I wanted to illustrate.

ALICIA: 3.) How was the idea for NOT A DROP TO DRINK series created, and did it turn out to be what you planned on, or did it change a lot from your initial idea?

MINDY: I watched a documentary called Blue Gold, which is about a projected shortage of potable water on our planet due to overpopulation. It was a horrible thought --- we all need water to survive, and it's something we can't make. I went to bed very grateful for the small pond in my backyard, and that night I dreamt I was teaching a young girl how to operate a rifle so that she could help me protect the pond. I woke up and thought, "Hey... I wrote a book in my head just now." It always stayed true to the initial inspiration.

ALICIA: 4.) What was the most challenging, and the most enjoyable aspect of writing this novel and why?

MINDY: The most challenging was changing the perspective and tone to stay inline with the feel and the world of DRINK, yet inject the humor and positivity of Lucy. The most enjoyable was writing Stebbs again. He’s so easy to write.

ALICIA: 5.) Can you tell us five random things about you?

MINDY: - I have a spinach smoothie every morning

- I hate it when I don’t transfer my clothes to the dryer quickly enough and they kind of smell musty but I wear them anyway to conserve energy.

- Right now I have five baby kittens in my house that need bottle-fed and butt-rubbed.

- I go to the gym twice a week and run twice a week. Muscles are good.

- The best compliment I ever received was, “Ok you don’t need my help. You’re much stronger than you look.” (At the gym, from a dude).

ALICIA: 6.) Can you tell us a little bit about our main character, Lucy, and what we can expect from her IN A HANDFUL OF DUST?

MINDY: She’s learning how to survive in her own way in a very dark and broken world, while trying to retain her positivity and humor at the same time. Lucy is afraid that she has too many elements of her mother - Neva - inside of her that won’t allow her to be strong enough to be a true survivor like Lynn. Yet at the same time she knows there are facets of Lynn’s personality that aren’t positive traits either. She has to find her own way, which in the end is the true point of the book.

ALICIA: 7.) If you could describe the IN A HANDFUL OF DUST in 10 words, what would they be?

MINDY: Surprising, epic, harsh, hopeful, funny, dark, sad, twisted, engaging, bittersweet.

ALICIA: Mindy, it was a blast having you here today! I can't WAIT to read IN A HANDFUL OF DUST, and experience for myself what everyone's been raving about!! McGinnis is an assistant YA librarian who lives in Ohio and cans her own food. She graduated from Otterbein University magna cum laude with a BA in English Literature and Religion. Mindy has a pond in her back yard but has never shot anyone, as her morals tend to cloud her vision.
