Commander and the love of her life, Chris Young, has gone missing in
action. A horrific battle with Omega has left too many good men and
women dead, and Cassidy must bear the burden of leadership in the
militia on her own.
But she's not about to give up.
the help of her faithful friends - and former enemies - she will stop
at nothing to rescue Chris and ensure victory for the militias in their
fight against the all-powerful Omega forces.
The game has shifted.
This time, Cassidy is one step ahead of the enemy.
When I wrote State of
Emergency, there were just five supporting characters surrounding
Cassidy and Chris. In State of Pursuit, there are seventeen. This is the
fourth installment in The Collapse Series, and I have to say: balancing
a cast of characters this big – and this diverse – has been an
interesting and fulfilling experience.
In book three, I
got to introduce a few new characters to the cast, and I was beyond
excited to be able to develop them in the fourth installment. One of
those characters is Uriah True, a Lieutenant in the militia. He has a
bit part in State of Rebellion, but he is quite prominent in book four.
Because Chris Young has been taken captive by Omega in this installment,
I could explore the development of some of the other male characters –
like Uriah – with a different perspective.
is a much darker character than Chris, and not as wise. I was also able
to add some new characters to the mix, like Arlene and Robert Lockwood.
Developing supporting players can be tricky when you’re writing from a
first person point of view. You are, in essence, showing character
growth through the eyes of the protagonist rather than telling about it
from an all-knowing perspective. It can be a challenge, but as a writer,
it’s the type of challenge that I really enjoy.
ask me who my favorite character is (besides Cassidy), and I find it a
little bit hard to choose just one. To be perfectly honest, I love all
of the characters – even the villainous ones. But I have a soft spot for
Manny, the eccentric, mysterious and loyal pilot who befriends Cassidy.

In my heart, I know that if we fail, there won’t be another way.

look around at the many faces watching me. All of them, good men and
women – even the ones I don’t necessarily get along with on a personal
level. They’re risking their lives for Chris – and for our cause.
“Vera,” I say. “I want you with me.”
She doesn’t reply. She simply nods, her expression a perfect poker face.
Life is short. It’s even shorter when you’re a soldier. Do the right thing, because tomorrow, you might not get the chance.
