 I Become Shadow

I Become Shadow
I Become Shadow

Ren Sharpe was abducted at fourteen and chosen by the mysterious F.A.T.E. Center to become a Shadow: the fearless and unstoppable guardian of a future leader. Everything she held dear—her family, her home, her former life—is gone forever.

Ren survives four years of training, torture, and misery, in large part thanks to Junie, a fellow F.A.T.E. abductee who started out as lost and confused as she did. She wouldn’t admit it was possible to find love in a prison beyond imagining, but what she feels for Junie may just be the closest thing to it.

At eighteen they part ways when Ren receives her assignment: find and protect college science student Gareth Young, or die trying. Life following a college nerd is uneventful, until an attack on Gareth forces Ren to track down the only person she can trust. When she and Junie discover that the F.A.T.E. itself might be behind the attacks, even certain knowledge of the future may not be enough to save their kidnappers from the killing machines they created.

Who Would You Cast:
REN

Please excuse me while I get on my high horse for a few moments. Who would I cast as Ren Sharpe? This question is very near and dear to my heart since as I wrote I BECOME SHADOW I’ve spent a lot time with Ren, and I would want her casting to be perfect. This next bit may seem like a tangent, but I promise I’ll tie back in.

I have played soccer since I was four and am pretty darn good at it. Whenever I, or any soccer player for that matter, watch a movie with actors playing soccer we cringe (Battleship, two eyes looking right at you). We can spot the posers instantly. You can’t learn to look like a player overnight and to the trained eye it’s embarrassing, for the actor and all involved.

My point is you can spot an athlete, or someone who’s spent a good chunk of their life centered around daily physical exertion. It’s in the way they carry themselves, the swagger in their walk. You can’t fake this. It’s earned in sweat, sacrifice, and bruises. Whoever is cast as Ren Sharpe needs to have this swagger. They need to look like they can take a punch, block a punch, and move in a way that tells you she could not only hold her own against larger foes, but destroy them. I don’t want people to see her character and think ‘poser’, and thus the soccer analogy. Whoever plays Ren will need to be able to strike a balance between a believable before (gangly, uncoordinated) and after (dyed-in-the-wool killing machine).

So if we’re being honest, I would hope a national casting call would be done to find the right Ren. She needs to be raw with a chip on her shoulder and I think an unknown would be perfect for that.

I shall dismount from my high horse now because there’s little fun being on it.

So of course having said all of the above, I found this picture of Kaya Scodelario which is pretty much Ren straight out of my imagination. Go figure.

I BECOME SHADOW is my debut novel, it's my debut anything over thirty pages if we're being honest.

I live in Austin, TX where I currently spend my days working a normal human job. My spare time is pretty well spoken for and split between writing and yard work.
