The future world has been divided into sectors--each the same as the other. Surrounded by thick steel fences, there is no way in and no way out. Yet a cyborg army penetrates each sector, picking off its citizens one by one, until no one is left. Behind the sectors' thick walls, the citizens wait to die. Few will be chosen to survive what's coming; the rest will be left behind to suffer. A new world has been created, and its rulers are incredibly selective on who will become a citizen. They want only those with important roles in society to help create a more perfect future.

Sixteen-year-old Sia lives in one of the sectors as part of a family that is far too ordinary to be picked to live. According to the digital clock that towers high above her sector, she has only fifteen days to live. Sia has seen the reports and knows a horrific death is in store for her, but she is determined to make the most of her final days. Sia refuses to mourn her short life, instead promising herself that she'll stay strong, despite being suffocated by her depressed mother and her frightened best friend. Just when Sia feels more alone than ever, she meets Mace, a mysterious boy. There is something that draws Sia to him, despite his dangerousness, and together, they join a group of rebels and embark on an epic journey to destroy the new world and its machines, and to put an end to the slaughter of innocent people.

ALICIA: Hi Kate, I'm SO excited to have you here today on Addicted Readers! :)

KATE: Hi Alicia! I’m really happy to be here :)

ALICIA: 1. Can you tell us how the amazing idea for DARK DAYS came too you, and has it changed a lot from your original idea? And if so, how?

KATE: With most things I write, I tend to be able to pinpoint exactly how it started – usually with an image. With DARK DAYS, I can’t recall what it was that initially sparked the idea. All I remember is imagining the clock tower counting down, and the cyborg army marching toward a walled community, and I suppose it just grew from there. I think it came from a combination between my love of dystopian novels and action movies! It did change quite a bit, taking new directions all the time. When one thing changes, everything else that led up to it or followed on from it must also change. I’ve written so many different endings!

ALICIA: 2. Can you tell us a little bit about our main character Sia? What are her character traits, determinations in this novel, her feelings on what's happening to her? Basically anything about Sia?

KATE: Poor Sia is in a pretty extreme situation in a terrifying world she can’t escape. She’s confused and frightened, angry and suffering. She tries desperately to gain some control in a place where she has none at all. She gets through it as best as she can, and is more or less resigned to dying, because she can see no other way of tackling what’s coming. But she does have things to fight for, and people around her she cares for, which is something she draws strength and confidence from. Once she grasps that, there’s no stopping her!

ALICIA: 3. What would you say was the most challenging part of writing DARK DAYS, and what aspects were the most challenging, and why?

KATE: There were a lot of challenges when writing this book, even before I wrote the first word, as there is with every book. I could be here all day with all my problems, but I’ll just pick one!! Well, two: beginning and ending. First chapters and last chapters are killers. I find endings in particular so hard!

ALICIA: 4. If DARK DAYS was opted for a movie, which actors/actress would you want to play your main characters?

KATE: This is fun! I know for sure I’d want Evanna Lynch to play Lilly. Ellen Page would make a good Sia.

***Evanna Lynch as Lilly***

***Ellen Page as Sia***

ALICIA: 5. Kate, you are in your character Sia's situation, and you have only 15 days left to live. You see the big red number counting down until you drawl your last breath. What are you prepared to do, Kate? Enjoy what little time you have left, and do all the things you've always wanted? Or, do you take a stand with the rebels and fight until the very end, no matter the outcome?

KATE: Okay, now I’m scared. I think I’d join the rebels. It’s try or die!

ALICIA: 6. Kate, if you lived in the world of DARK DAYS, what side of the wall do you think the Rulers would decide you belonged? On the safe side that ensures you live a long life doing something "Productive" to ensure the future of the new world? Or, would you find yourself on the wrong side of the wall where all will be murdered in cold blood in 15 days and counting? And why do you believe that's where you would be?
KATE: I’d like to think they’d let me in, but they are pretty cruel and extremely selective. I think I’d be left behind *cries*

ALICIA: 7. Kate, you woke up tomorrow and found that you could teleport into any one fictional novel, and be any character, and could change any thing about any situation. What novel would you decide to jump in, and what character would you be, and what would you change, keep the same, and or combine from another novel, and why would you do those things?

KATE: This is such a fun question! Most of the novels I love are way too scary and dangerous to transport into. I wouldn’t want sending to the arena, or to be living in the dauntless compound *cowers* so I’ll have to pick something much safer... I think I’d be Wendy from Amanda Hocking’s Trylle trilogy, living in that world. I’d bring the revenants over from Amy Plum’s Die For Me series, because they’d be really fun to be around and good to have on our side in case of attack. I’d also add the Shadowhunters from Cassandra Clare’s TMI series for the same reason. Woo hoo, and that means I have Finn, Loki, Jace, and Vincent all living in my castle!

ALICIA: Kate, it was such a blast having you here today and I look forward to reading DARK DAYS and your future work! :)

KATE: Thanks so much, Alicia! I loved answering these fab questions.

  1. Ohh, fun questions! Love when you get to pick a cast, and question #7! I'd love to be in the Gods & Monsters series by Kelly Keaton, pretty badass. Has everything I love in a book, Greek Mythology, Greek Gods & Goddesses, curses, Voodoo, vampires, mythical creatures, even Gorgons, eek. Okay, dangerous place, but sounds pretty amazing, and set in New Orleans. I'd bring over most of the characters from Vampire Academy, because ohhh, that would be fun, haha. :)

I love meeting new people through comments, and I always try to comment back! Thanks for stopping by! :)
