Amanda Obermann. Code name Iris.

It’s Testing Day. The day that comes without warning, the day when all juniors and seniors at The Peel Academy undergo a series of intense physical and psychological tests to see if they’re ready to graduate and become government operatives. Amanda and her boyfriend Abe are top students, and they’ve just endured thirty-six hours of testing. But they’re juniors and don’t expect to graduate. That’ll happen next year, when they plan to join the CIA—together.

But when the graduates are announced, the results are shocking. Amanda has been chosen—the first junior in decades. And she receives the opportunity of a lifetime: to join a secret government organization called the Annum Guard and travel through time to change the course of history. But in order to become the Eighth Guardian in this exclusive group, Amanda must say good-bye to everything—her name, her family, and even Abe—forever.

Who is really behind the Annum Guard? And can she trust them with her life?

"THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN had everything I wanted in a story: I fell in love with the characters, gasped at the mystery, and laughed at Iris's unfailing snark. Lucky for me, this high-energy, edge-of-your-seat thriller is only the first in what I know will become one of my favorite series." ~Susan Dennard, author of the SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY Trilogy.

ALICIA: Hi Meredith, I am so excited to have you here on Addicted Readers today! :)

MEREDITH: Thanks for having me!

ALICIA: 1. Before we get started, can you tell us a little bit about THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN, and what we can look forward too on it's release?

MEREDITH:  Sure! The book centers around a 16-year-old girl at a boarding school run by the government to train future CIA operatives. But then she’s taken (almost literally) and forced into a top secret time-traveling government organization called Annum Guard, and, well, things aren’t always what they seem. . . .

Here’s the official jacket copy:

Who is really behind the Annum Guard? And can she trust them with her life?

I’m so excited for its release! I’ve just commissioned an artist to draw portraits of the eight guardians, and I’ll be revealing them soon on my website in anticipation for the release. Stay tuned! I’m also having a release party and signing, so anyone in the South Florida area is more than welcome to come check it out! Details are on my site.

ALICIA: 2. First, can we talk about THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN'S cover? WOW, it's amazing! Truly! Before I even knew what your book was about, I knew I had to read it! How does the cover play in with the actual story? And second, the detail is amazing, did you have an say in what you wanted your cover to look like, and third, don't you just love the way it turned out?? Seriously, how can anyone not, right??? ;)

MEREDITH:  Thank you! I’m so, so happy with how the cover turned out! I think it’s absolutely perfect. It was designed by Katrina Damkoehler and illustrated by the legendary Cliff Nielsen. Katrina came up with the concept. She started with the owl badge. That same badge is going to be on every cover in the series, with different illustrations behind it. If you read the book, you’ll know that this owl plays a pretty important role in the story!

As for the illustration itself, it’s the Boston Massacre, which is one of the historical events Iris actually gets to witness firsthand in the book. The swirling colors and lights are meant to represent that last second a Guardian would see before he or she jumps through time. It’s a little snapshot of what Iris would have seen.

So cool, right? I just love my cover. Skyscape knocked it out of the park.

ALICIA: 3. Can you tell us without giving spoilers, what is the group the Eighth Guardian, and what does their job entail? Are they well respected, and highly despised?

MEREDITH: Annum Guard is made up of eight members, who travel back in time and tweak the past to improve the present. Their motto is “Enhancement, not alteration.” They don’t do anything that would materially alter the past. Well, they try not to, at least. ;) Their organization is top secret, so no one really knows they exist.

ALICIA: 4. What was your inspiration to write THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN, and did it turn out like you hoped it would?

MEREDITH: The inspiration came from a song title—IRIS WAS A PUPIL by Autechre. That was just a cool title in my mind, and I asked myself a billion questions—Who is Iris? What is she a pupil of? What happened to her? Within days, I’d taken the title and spun it into a fast-paced time travel thriller in my mind. So funny how these things work. It took several drafts to get it exactly the way I wanted it, but it all came together in the end.

ALICIA: 5. Can you tell us how much work, time, research, and planning went into writing THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN?

MEREDITH:  Oh gosh. So much. I had to write about three drafts before I even got the story right, then there were multiple rounds of revisions with critique partners, my agent, then ultimately my editor. One of the trickiest parts about writing time travel is all the historical research that pops up. Questions that are relatively simple—What was the price of gold in 1895? What did security cameras look like in 1990? How much was cab fare in 1961?—but could take hours to find answers to. I probably spent as much time researching all the little details as I did writing.

ALICIA: 6. If your book was opted for a movie deal, what actors/actress would you want to play your main characters?

MEREDITH: You know, I am not good with this question, and I get it a lot, so you’d think I’d have figured out an answer by now! But really, if the book was optioned for a movie and eventually put into production, my honest wish is that directors would cast someone relatively unknown who’s true to Iris’s Moroccan-Romanian-American heritage.

FUN QUESTIONS:

ALICIA:  - If you were in Amanda's shoes, what would you have done? Stay at school for at least another year, or go in to the Annum Guard and travel through time to change the course of history?

MEREDITH: Oh, I totally would have joined Annum Guard! Time travel is one of things I’ve always wished was really possible. How cool would that be?

ALICIA:  - If you were given the opportunity to change any course of time, either in your life, or anything in history, would you, or would you leave alone what shouldn't be changed?

MEREDITH: Hmm. This is a really deep question, lol! I know I’d be tempted to change certain things in my past for sure, but ultimately I’d leave them alone. I’m a firm believer that things happen for a reason, so why go messing with them?

ALICIA:  - Your FORCED to travel in time to change 3 things, what would they be and why?

MEREDITH: Well, if you’re going to force me! I wouldn’t touch any major historical events because I’d probably just mess things up, so I’ll keep it personal. 1) I would prevent my 14-year-old self from quitting my high school soccer team because that was one of the dumbest decisions of my life. 2) I would strongly encourage myself to start weight training about ten years earlier because that was one of the smartest decisions of my life. 3) I’d spend more time with relatives who’ve passed.

ALICIA:  - Last question. If you lived in a world like THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN, would you believe changing the course of time was the right thing to do, or would you try to start a rebellion to ensure that time is not disturbed?

MEREDITH: I think, like Iris, I’d jump at the chance to alter the past, but over time, I’m sure I’d have my doubts that I was doing the right thing, just like she does. . . .

ALICIA:  Thank you SO much Meredith for visiting us here at Addicted Readers! :) I look forward to reading THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN when it releases soon! :)

MEREDITH: Thank you, Alicia! I hope you like the book!
