When Mia Mitchell, a hardcore but lonely former Marine, steps into an alley to pull some thugs off an unlucky foreigner, she walks into a fight she expects. What she doesn’t see coming is the foreigner making her a job offer any sane person would refuse. So, she takes it. She thinks she’s headed for some third-world country; instead she’s mysteriously transported to an Earth-like parallel world. That’s a mad left-hook.

Mia discovers a matriarchal dystopia where freedom doesn’t exist and fighting for it means execution. Lethal force bends all to the law; women fear for their families and un-wed men suffer slavery. Mia’s job is to train an underground syndicate of male freedom-fighters for a violent revolution. However, the guys don’t want a pair of X chromosomes showing them the way.
Eben, an escaped slave, is encouraged by Mia to become a leader among the men. But when he turns his quiet determination on her, it spells F.U.B.A.R. for cynical Mia. Their unexpected connection threatens more than her exit strategy; it threatens the power struggle festering with in the syndicate.

Haunted by nightmares and post-traumatic stress, unsure who to trust or how to get home, Mia struggles to stay alive as she realizes all is not what it seems.

PLAY LIST

Lana Del Rey: Born to Die

I think I’m in love with Lana Del Rey and her sound. It just has this beautiful gritty melancholia to it. The lyrics to this song are almost perfect for Mia’s situation at the beginning of the novel.

Lana Del Rey : Video Games

Lana Del Ray : Dark Paradise

This is another song that is perfect for Mia—the loss she has experienced and the turmoil she is going through.

Lana Del Ray : Carmen

Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis : Can Hold Us

This is a great song for a revolution. So yeah, it’s on my playlist.

Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis : Neon Cathedral

This song is perfect for both Eben and Mia. We all have our unhealthy addictions. “History makes slaves of us all.” This is the tag line on the cover of Across the Wire and it also relates to both Mia and Eben’s addictions—holding on to the past when it only hampers forward progress. The tag line also references society’s grip on the past as well, and it’s obstruction to social evolution.

Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis : Bom Bom

This is the sound track for the mining camp op when Eben meets Mia and becomes a free man. There is a sort of hesitation, mystery, and action present in this music. Do you hear it too or am I just crazy? I might be crazy, but it’s still a great song. LOL!

Lorde : Ribs

Lorde : Buzzcut Season

Avicii : Wake Me Up

Avicii : You Make Me

Serena Ryder : What I Wouldn’t Do

This really feels like the entrance little Gabriel makes in Mia’s life. Mia has crouched down in her pit of loneliness and called it home. Gabriel is the first one to throw her a line she can crawl out of her hole with.

Imagine Dragons : Tiptoe

This is a song for the MRF, the resistance. “Hey yeah, don’t let ‘em know we’re coming.”

Imagine Dragons : Amsterdam

This song is for Eben. It’s perfect! It addresses his friendship with Gavin “I’m sorry , Brother. I’m sorry I let you down. Well these days you’re fine, no these days you tend to lie.”

It touches on his internal struggle of moving beyond his slavery “You’re time will come, if you wait for it. If you wait for it. It’s hard, believe me, I’ve tried. But I keep coming up short.”

It even touches on his thoughts of Mia “I’m sorry lover, I’m sorry I bring you down. Well these days I try, and these days I tend to lie. Kinda thought I was a mystery and then I thought it wasn’t meant to be. You said fantastically, congratulation you were all alone.”

Imagine Dragons : Bleed Out

This is a perfect song for both Eben and Mia’s determination to “keep moving.” I love this song.

[DSC_4372eeeecc.jpg]All my life I’ve dreamed of stories or have had my nose buried in one. I live in Edmonton, Canada with my husband and my weird sense of humor.

I love old war movies, dystopian fiction, and any story with action, a good plot, and characters I'd get into a fight at the pub for. Not that I'm a brawler or anything. Unless you think that out-of-print book or vintage piece at the thrift shop is going home with you instead of me. Then, my friend, the gloves are off.
