Donna Pierce might hear voices, but that doesn’t mean she’s crazy. Probably.

The voices do serve their purpose, though—whenever Donna hears them, she knows she’s in danger. So when they start yelling at the top of their proverbial lungs, it’s no surprise she and her best friend, Deke, end up narrowly escaping a zombie horde. Alone without their families, they take refuge at their high school with the super-helpful nerds, the bossy head cheerleader, and—best of all?—Lance, hottie extraordinaire and Donna’s long-time crush. When Lance is around, it’s easy to forget about the moaning zombies, her dad’s plight to reach them, and how weird Deke is suddenly acting toward her.

But as the teens’ numbers dwindle and their escape plans fall apart, Donna has to listen to the secrets those voices in her head have been hiding. It seems not all the zombies are shuffling idiots, and the half-undead aren’t really down with kids like Donna…

ALICIA: Hi Alison, I'm thrilled to have you here today on Addicted Readers! :)

ALISON: Thank you so much for having me! I really appreciate it.

ALICIA: 1. I'm a huge fan of zombie books, they really fascinate me. So can you tell us what made you want to write a zombie book with romance, and what was the best part about writing it?

ALISON: Zombie stories (books/TV/movies) tend to be either really bleak or really funny. I wanted to head in the funny direction—something more like Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead. Originally, I wrote the novel for middle grade readers, but the characters kept flirting. One of my crit partners was like, “Um, why don’t you just go ahead and make this a YA novel?” I took her advice and suddenly, the romance was driving the plot. The book went in a completely new direction.

ALICIA: 2. Can you tell us what was the most helpful advice you ever received about writing or anything bookish?

ALISON: Don’t listen to naysayers. You’ll meet a lot of people telling you: don’t write that, this will never sell, etc. You can’t please everyone, so you might as well write a book you enjoy.

ALICIA: 3. What would you say was the most challenging part of writing DONNA OF THE DEAD, and what made it a challenge?

ALISON: Deke was the easiest part of the novel to write. He’s such a classic good guy; it would’ve been cake to write the novel from his POV. Donna was much, much harder. I wanted her to sort of bumble through the apocalypse and take her time finding her courage. I was tempted to Mary Sue her a few times and make her a more likeable character, but in the end, I was glad I didn’t. I was tired of zombie books (and YA books, in general) with insta-heroines.

ALICIA: 4. Can you tell us a little bit about are main character Donna. What are her most identifying character traits?

ALISON: Donna doesn’t have the typical qualities you’d expect from a main character. She’s not brave or strong, and she’s upset that the zombie apocalypse has screwed up her life. Let’s face it—we all know a Donna. And in the event of a real pandemic, some of us (*raises hand*) might act a little bit like she does.

ALICIA: 5. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans and fans to come?

ALISON: I’m flattered to think I might have fans. J Thanks to everyone who took the time to read the book—and thanks to everyone who contacted me asking if Donna will have more adventures.

Fun Questions

ALICIA: 6. If you were caught in a Zombie Apocalypse, what would you say would be your best chance of survival?

ALISON: Hmm… I don’t know how to shoot a gun or crossbow, but I am pretty good at climbing trees. As long as the zombies can’t climb, I might last a few hours.

ALICIA: 7. Do you think your educated enough on "Zombies" to survive if a Zombie Apocalypse broke out tomorrow? And what would you say would be the most important thing you needed to do in order to survive?

ALISON: I think the most important thing would be to stay away from Wal-Mart. Because you know everyone’s heading there first to stock up on supplies. Wal-Mart = breeding ground for mass zombie pandemic.

(BTW, you sound like such a zombie aficionado, I wish I could hear all your answers to these questions!)

ALICIA: 8. If you somehow knew a Zombie Apocalypse was coming, and you had 24 hours before the zombies hit your City, what would you do within those 24 hours?

ALISON: My family plays this game! (Yes, we are all zombie nerds). They joke that I’d go to Starbucks first. To be honest, I live in a rural area, and I’m friends with a few “live off the land” survivalist types. I’ve already let them know that in the event of a zombie emergency, I’ll be showing up at their house. With my family and a ton of Starbucks.

Alison Kemper grew up in South Florida, the only girl on a street with eleven boys. She spent most of her childhood paddling a canoe through neighborhood canals and looking for adventure. She usually found it. Sometimes the police were involved. And large dogs. And one time, a very territorial snake. She now lives in North Carolina and writes books. The books often include girls having adventures. With boys. Cute boys. And cute dogs too. But no cute snakes. Never cute snakes.

Her debut novel, Donna of the Dead, will be published by Entangled Teen in 2014 and followed by two companion novels. She loves to meet new people and talk books, so send her a friend request or connect with her on Twitter and Instagram.
