(The Hitchhiker Strain #2)
Published: March 2014
Genres: YA, Dystopian, Zombies
The end of everything came quickly, but the road back is endless and full of heartbreak.

After months of only death and loss, Veritas may be the answer everyone has been searching for—a cure. Savannah wants nothing more than to begin rebuilding, but with both the Initiative and the United Militia vying for power, there are no easy answers. Ending the threat for good could mean becoming something far worse than the monsters she is fighting against.

The infected will not go quietly. For Chelsea, the choice to step back into the world of the living is anything but simple. No miracle can erase the memories of the things she saw or the people she killed. While the girl she was struggles against the beast she became, Chelsea must make a choice—succumb or fight.

Mortality (The Hitchhiker Strain, #1)
Kellie Sheridan
(The Hitchhiker Strain #1)
Published: March 19th, 2013
Genres: YA, Dystopian, Zombies
After surviving a deadly plague outbreak, sixteen-year-old Savannah thought she had lived through the very worst of human history. There was no way to know that the miracle vaccine would put everyone at risk for a fate worse than un-death.

Now, two very different kinds of infected walk the Earth, intent on nothing but feeding and destroying what little remains of civilization. When the inoculated are bitten, infection means watching on in silent horror as self-control disappears and the idea of feasting on loved ones becomes increasingly hard to ignore.

Starving and forced to live inside of the abandoned high school, all Savannah wants is the chance to fight back. When a strange boy arrives with a plan to set everything right, she gets her chance. Meeting Cole changes everything. Mere survival will never be enough.

ALICIA: Hi Kellie, I am so excited to be doing this interview with you here today! :-)

KELLIE: I’m excited too! It’s been a crazy time of year so it’s definitely nice to sit down and get back to why I love this series so much. Thanks for having me!

ALICIA: How excited are you to be having the second book in The Hitchhiker Series, Duality releasing this month?

KELLIE: Mostly, I’m massively excited (and a little stressed) but it’s also a little sad. This will be my last book with Savannah, at least for a while and I’m going to miss her. I’m also going to miss writing about zombies… is that weird?

ALICIA: So, before we get into the interesting questions, can you tell us a little bit about The Hitchhiker Series, for readers that aren't familiar with it?

KELLIE: The Hitchhiker Strain is a YA series about a second strain of the zombie virus, one which effectively wipes out civilization as we know it. Both books follow Savannah, a sixteen year old girl, surviving in the new world and trying to make a difference. Both Mortality and Duality have second POV characters as well, but I’ll leave that part for readers to figure out on their own… although the next question offers a pretty big hint ;)

ALICIA: Okay, something I've been dying to know since starting this series back in March. How was it being in the mind of a Zombie? Or not a full blown Zombie, but I guess Zarah was kinda stuck somewhere in between a zombie and a human, but how much fun was it to write about it, and was it hard to come up with nasty flesh-eating scene actually being in the mind of the Flesh-eater?

KELLIE: This is the strangest thing, but… at times I’ve actually had an easier time writing from the zombie/infected perspective than from Savannahs. It’s a lot of fun! For me, it’s been mainly about stripping characters down to their base instincts and then adding in a healthy dose of hunger for meat.

ALICIA: Now, since this is one of my fave series of all time, :) I just have to know how it came to be?

KELLIE: Two summers ago, I became OBSESSED with zombies. Books and The Walking Dead mostly… I’m too much of a wimp for zombie movies (or scary movies, period). Without even really planning to, I just started writing, wanting to put my own spin on the genre. My goal was to use this classic monster, and focus more on surviving when people start eating people then on the horror of it all.

ALICIA: Can you give us a little hint of what's to come in the next book Duality?

KELLIE: More zombies. Revisiting old friends. Facing some of the things that happened in book one and looking at the emotional consequences. And loss.

ALICIA: What was the hardest part about writing this series, or "Being in the mind of a Zombie" and why?

KELLIE: I’d have to say it was balancing the zombie mindset with the concept of The Hitchhiker Strain where the person’s mind is still shoved somewhere inside the zombie, unable to do anything but survive.

ALICIA: Do you have anything planned for after this series is complete? Like anything in the works that we can look forward to in the future?

KELLIE: I had three different ideas that I was playing with, all in the sci-fi/fantasy vein, and I just couldn’t choose which one I wanted to write. But then an entirely different idea hit me all at once, something really unexpected… and I’m in love! No details yet, but I can’t wait to get started.

I also have something big planned for 2014… a high fantasy series I’ve been playing around with for seven or eight years now. In theory, I’m hoping to work on it all year and let anyone who wants to follow along in the process, then release it January 1st, 2015. We’ll see how it plays out, but I’m really excited about that project too.

ALICIA: Savannah, was by far by favorite character in the first book Mortality, but Zarah was awesome too, which character was more fun to write about and why?

KELLIE: Ahhhh! Don’t make me choose. Zarah was definitely easier to write, since as a character she’s much more passive. Savannah is anything but, so she kept me on my toes from beginning to end. If I haavvvee to choose, I’d have to go with Zarah though, since she has such an interesting character arc.

ALICIA: How many books in The Hitchhiker series can we look forward too?

KELLIE: Right now, just the two (plus End Dayz, the prequel collection). But with any kind of apocalypse, there’s never a definitive end. There won’t be any more zombies for me in 2014, but in the future, who knows? There are still lots of other characters in Savannah’s world that I’d love to explore. Plus, we’ve got a world to rebuild!

ALICIA: Kellie, do you have a plan if a Zombie Apocalypses hits tomorrow?

KELLIE: Hide. Being in Canada, I wouldn’t have the first idea about where to find guns. And I can’t imagine chopping something’s head off. My best case scenario would be teaming up with a group and working towards their survival behind the scenes.

ALICIA: If you were in a Zombie Apocalypse, and you were being horded out of your house by a herd of Zombies, and you only had time to grab 3 things, what would they be and why?

KELLIE: My dogs. I know it’s a long shot that they’d survive for long, but I couldn’t leave them. If you’re looking more for three personal objects… heh, even then I’d probably try for items to help me survive. Whatever seems most valuable that I can get to without putting myself in danger.

ALICIA: Weapon of choice to fight off Zombies and why?

KELLIE: I would love a katana like Michonne from The Walking Dead—effective and quiet, it’s a deadly combination.

ALICIA: If you got bitten by a zombie, would you cut off your own arm to stop the virus from spreading, or would you just take yourself out?

KELLIE: I think I’d take some of the time I had before becoming dangerous to say goodbye, and then ask someone else to do it for me. Aww, now I’m sad.

ALICIA: If you could choose anyone, Fictional or Non-Fictional, who would you want on your side when fighting off zombies?

KELLIE: That’s a tough one! Just one person? Hmm… fictional. I wonder how (J.K. Rowling’s) wizards would do against zombies? I guess Avada Kedavera wouldn’t work on the undead? Now I want to write a wizards vs. zombies book!

Sooo… to answer your question. Albus Dumbledore. If nothing else, having broomsticks to fly around on would make travel a lot safer.

ALICIA: Last question. Would you, Kellie, survive a Zombie Apocalypse?

KELLIE: Nope. Well, not by myself at least.

ALICIA: Kellie, is there anything you would like to say to all your fans reading this interview?

KELLIE: To the fans? Thannnkkk youuu so much for your support this year. An author only gets one debut year, and mine was wonderful. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Here’s to a wonderful 2014 for all of us!

Kellie SheridanI have been in love with stories in all of their forms for as long as I can remember. Admittedly, sometimes that means falling into places like Stars Hollow and Sunnydale, but books have always been my true love. In early 2011 I began writing a book blog in order to share my favorite reads with book lovers. From there, the bookish community encouraged me to stop sitting on my own stories and share them instead. Since then I’ve been madly devouring everything I can about digital publishing.

For the past two years I have been mainly obsessed with young adult books, but my favorite stories still come from the adult fantasy genre. As far as I’m concerned, Briggs, Bishop, Vincent and Vaughn are all must reads.

I spent part of my twenties living in Galway, Ireland and swooning after various lilting accents but am now back home in Ontario, Canada. My family includes two Glen of Imaal Terriers and a Green Cheek Conure.
