When everything that defines you is stripped away, who do you become?

War has come to Atalanta, infecting its quiet villages and lush woodlands, igniting whispered worries in its glittering capitol.

All across the dominion, young men are being Selected for Military and sent to the front lines…and eighteen-year-old Aris Haan’s childhood sweetheart is one of them.

Pyralis Nekkos, Atalanta’s leader, has kept the truth from his people, that their dominion will fall…and much sooner than anyone could guess.

Galena Vadim, his reluctant ally, wishes she could forget their shared past...until her future seems to depend on it.

And for the boy she loves, Aris, a talented wingjet pilot, will give up everything - her home, her name, even her face...

...only to become the key to her dominion's survival.

ALICIA: Hi Tracy, thank you so much for allowing me to Interview you, and Book Spotlight SHATTERED VEIL, and for sponsoring this awesome giveaway in the Fire And Ice Spotlight/blog hop!
TRACY: Thanks so much for having me! I’m honored.

ALICIA: 1. Before we get started, can you tell us in your own words a little about your up coming release SHATTERED VEIL, for readers who are unfamiliar with it?

TRACY: Shattered Veil is the first book in a YA/NA scifi trilogy. It follows a young, talented wingjet pilot, Aris Haan, who does something totally insane to be with the boy she loves…only to discover that her choice has repercussions far beyond her love life. It changes her…and might even change the course of her country’s future.

ALICIA: 2. What inspired you to write SHATTERED VEIL, and what are some key factors that aided your final decision to official move forward with writing SHATTERED VEIL?

TRACY: I was inspired to write Shattered Veil by my husband’s deployment to Iraq. We were facing a year apart and the distance and longing was just breaking my heart. The war and his safety were all I could think about. Writing this book was a way to channel some of those feelings and worries. The final push came with Nanowrimo…I wrote the first draft as part of nano that year. (Then followed it up with three YEARS of revisions! Ha ha. Usually I write much faster!).

ALICIA: 3. What was your favorite book that YOU have written, and why is it your favorite?

TRACY: Honestly, I think Shattered Veil is my favorite so far, though I just finished a YA fantasy I’m totally in love with. But I have such a personal connection to Aris and to the war and military stuff that happens in SV…my husband and I had a lot of discussions about the military stuff, and I loved how involved he was in the planning of it. It’s the “book of my heart”, I guess. Now, having said that, I’ve started working on the sequel, and I have a sneaking suspicion it may take SV’s place as my favorite. There’s just so much action and drama in it – oh my gosh, I’m so excited about it!

ALICIA: 4. In Shattered Veil, what are some of the main character Aris's key personality traits?
I love Aris; in a way, there’s a bit of wish fulfillment with her character for me. She begins the book kind of weak and vulnerable. She thinks she needs to be taken care of and has no idea how strong she is. And throughout the story she’s tested to the extreme, both physically and emotionally, and she totally rises to the challenge. Some of the stuff she goes through – oh my gosh, she’s so STRONG – and I wish I could be like that. I’m more on the “weak, vulnerable” side myself. Ha ha.

ALICIA: 5. Can you tell us what The diatous veil technology is and what part it plays in this novel?

TRACY: The diatous veil is a holographic second skin that is used to make women look like men, so they can fight in the male-only Military. It’s what Aris uses to disguise herself to join the war effort. It may figure into the plot in other ways, but I can’t really talk about that without spoiling it. ;-)

ALICIA: 6. What was the hardest part about writing your up coming release Shattered Veil, and is there anything you would do differently now that it's written?

TRACY: I think the hardest part was figuring out HOW to tell the story. I’ve been living in this world and in Aris’s head for years, and this book has gone through MANY iterations. I began working on it while I was represented by an agent, and there were certain elements of the story that she felt wouldn’t be of interest to editors, so I took them out. But I never felt like the story was full and whole that way, so when I decided to break out on my own, I took a really hard look at what was actually on the page versus the story I saw in my head…and just tried to be as true to my vision as I possibly could. I literally wrote 13 drafts/versions of this book. I feel really proud of how it ultimately turned out…I put in the time and work to make it the story I wanted to tell. As for something I would do differently….I think I would have trusted my vision earlier. Not that my agent was wrong, necessarily. Just that it was worth trying to get the story RIGHT while staying true to the characters and world that lived in my head. Does that make sense? Now I’m babbling. J

ALICIA: 7. First place you were when the idea of Shattered Veil came to mind, and what was the first idea that sparked the flame?

TRACY: Shortly after my husband deployed, I had a dream about a girl in high school whose boyfriend was deployed and all of her friends told her to just forget him and move on. I woke up SO MAD. Ha ha. I laugh when I think of that first dream and how the story evolved. Also, at the time a lot of people were talking about the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for LGBT in the US military – when I first started writing, it was still in place. I liked the idea of taking that concept and exploring it through gender roles.

ALICIA: 8. In ten words, describe Shattered Veil?

TRACY: Ooh. Um. Can I steal some words from author Jennifer Walkup (Second Verse)? She called Shattered Veil “a heart-crushing, edge-of-your-seat, wild ride of love and war” and I just LOVE that description. (Sorry – I know I cheated a little on that one! ;-))

ALICIA: War is raging, people are dying, and YOU have been separated from the love of your life. He's been forced into the vicious army to fight a war they have no chance of winning, what are you willing to do to get back to him? ;)

TRACY: Ha! I think this question is so funny because Shattered Veil is itself sort of my fantasy answer to this question. I wrote it because the love of my life WAS off fighting a war and I wished SO MUCH that I could be with him. But, in reality, I don’t think I’m nearly as badass as Aris – or the female soldiers in our military – so I’d probably just have gotten myself killed. :-/

ALICIA:  If your book Shattered Veil was opted for a movie deal, and you could have any actor/actress play your characters, who would they be, and why would the be perfect for the part.

TRACY: I’ve thought about this one a lot, for fun, and I’m still not 100% sure. Maybe Nina Dobrev or Emma Watson for Aris. I think they have the acting chops to play both girl and boy roles. For Calix, a young Zachary Levi would be awesome. Major Vidar: Liam Hemsworth would be nice. ;-) Dysis: I always imagine her as a young Angelina Jolie.

Each ding of rain against the roof was a knife driving into Aris’s chest, pinning her, sleepless and shaking, to the bed. How it could be time already? The faint milky glow of the village pathways seeped along the rim of her room’s shades, shedding just enough light to make the dark shapes of furniture frightening. She stared blindly at the ceiling, listening to the rain. Usually the sound soothed her, helped her slide into soft-focus dreams.

But tonight, all she could think about was how different things would be, if it rained like this in Safara. If the desert didn’t suck its people dry.

Tears skated hot down her cheeks as the pounding of the rain hammered against her bones.

When Calix tapped a fingernail on the window, she slipped silently into the waterlogged night. The time for casual greetings, for words, had passed. She threw herself against him, her hands snaking into his hair. He grabbed her right back, his mouth finding hers in the rain and the dark, as he pressed her against the side of the house.

As the water ran down them, she ran her hands along his cheeks, his ears, his closed eyes, touching, memorizing. The slickness of his wet hair beneath her fingers, the sensation of his strong arms around her, the warmth that pooled in her belly when he pulled her closer, running his hands down her back. She found the hem of his military-issue jacket and slid her hands underneath, paying attention to the smooth heat of his skin, vowing she’d remember the way his flat stomach felt against her fingers.

“Mosquito,” he whispered against her mouth. She shook her head and kissed him harder. She wasn’t ready for this moment to be over. Not when they had so few moments left.
