Published: November 29th, 2011
Genres: YA, Dystopian, Sci-f
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic's wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic's highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country's most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.

From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths - until the day June's brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family's survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias's death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.

Why, oh, WHY, did I wait so long to read Legend???? I can not for the life of me figure out why I did not pick this book up sooner!!! It was amazing, I was hooked from the first chapter! The world that Marie Lu created was addicting, satisfying, and filled me with so much emotion I could hardly contain myself!

The characters had so much depth and layers to their personality, and it was so much fun watching them layers peel back one by one. Each main character had a very hard life one way or the another. Granted, June was raised in the upper class with everything at her finger tips, but she has lost everyone she loved except her only brother, but eventually he is even taken from her, and she is left utterly alone! What good is money and riches if you don't have anyone to share it with?

And Day, the other main Character was the opposite of June. He comes from the slums, and lived as a lower class citizen. He had nothing materialistic as a child, his parents had to do everything they could just to find Day and his other 2 brothers their next meal. But at least he had a family to spend these days with. So again, the opposite of June, he had nothing, but he had all his family, which is everything! So when Day and June's worlds collide, it sparks fireworks...

Being the only 12 year old to ever make it into college, June has it rough, and all she's wants to do is survive. That is until that fateful night when June's life changes forever!

Her brother is murdered one night during a routine guard shipment detail. The prime suspect? No other then the notorious felon, Day. But of course the chase is invisible, because Day is the ghost that haunts the Republic. No one knows who he is, or where he's at, or what he's even capable of. But all that changes when June's brother is murdered and she is pulled out of college and recruited into the same guard that her brother worked for and is given the top case in their division. To hunt down and bring in the Republics most notorious felon, Day!

June is ready, she wants nothing more then to capture and watch the boy who murdered her brother suffer! And she's determined to make it happen!! She will stop at nothing to bring her brothers murderer to justice. But what if June is chasing the wrong man? What if it's all a lie? What if the same people who are at her side, are the same people who murdered her family???  What will she do then?????

Day failed his testing that all 11 year olds must take. And the price for failing? Well to the citizens eyes, they go to a labor camp to work and help their Republic get stronger, and prepare for the impending war. But the truth is, they either become test subjects, or are killed. They're considered unworthy of the air they breath and the space they take up. All because they didn't get a certain number on their testing!!! But Day's not giving up! No, he's just getting started!!!

That's how Day's story starts!

Day miraculously survived his experiment and is thought to be dead! He was tossed away with the rest of the 11 year old kids who were murdered by the Republic. He awakes in the morgue with body after body surrounding him. His first instinct, RUN, and keep running, and never let them catch you!

3 years later, Day struggles each day to survive, but he's determined to stay alive and bring the Republic as much pain as they've brought him! He spends his days surviving, scraping for food, and causing as many problems for the Republic as he can, all while hiding his true identity. Because if the Republic ever found out who he really was, then they would fix the mistake they made years ago, by not making sure he was really dead!

Day is surviving, but just barely when the unthinkable happens. His family is put under quarantine and are locked in their home with no support from the government to either get better or worse, die!! Day being the strong, unstoppable, hardheaded felon he is, he won't let that happen. He's determined to get the medicine his family needs to survive, no matter the cost, he will NOT let them die without doing everything in his power to stop it!

And that is Day's undoing! He happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time when he attempts to steal the medicine his family needs, and he is framed for June's bothers murder! Now June and the Republic are hunting him, and they will stop at nothing to bring him to justice!

But when Day and June come face to face, June knows somethings not right. She knows that this sweet, caring, hard edged, strong, determined boy can not be the one who ended her brothers life!! And she's vowel's to find out the truth, no matter what it reveals, she will find her brothers killer and bring him to justice, or die trying!!!!

This is a high tension type of book, that will have you on your toes, biting your nails down to the bone, while you go through, murder, mystery, drama, suspense, all wrapped around a corrupt government in a Sci-f dystopian world, that will have you demanding the next book!!

This book was a great with so many genres wrapped up in one!! I'm ready for Prodigy!!!

Marie Lu was born in China in 1984 (perhaps a sign of dystopian stories to come), and moved from Beijing to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in the same year the Tiananmen Square massacre happened. Eventually she and her parents settled down in Sugar Land, Texas—which she still considers her hometown.

She finished her first novel when she was 15 years old, but it took her second manuscript to acquire a literary agent. When that one didn’t sell either, she went off to college in Los Angeles and wrote two more manuscripts. Although those still didn’t sell, one of them did get her the amazing literary agent Kristin Nelson, who sold her fifth manuscript, the dystopian young adult novel LEGEND, to Putnam Children’s/Penguin USA at auction in a major deal. LEGEND will be coming out on November 29, 2011 as Putnam Children’s and Penguin Young Readers Group’s lead title. LEGEND is Marie’s debut novel.

Marie graduated in 2006 from USC and currently resides in Los Angeles, where she spends her time stuck in traffic.

  1. Legend is truly a mind-blowing, suspenseful and emotional story! I wasn't expecting the love I ended up having for these characters. I honestly loved it. Haven't read the second or third yet, but from what I have seen, I think I will love them too!
