 Dystopian/ Sci-Fi

When she was just seventeen, the course of Celaine Stevens' life was permanently altered with the murders of her father, mother, and brother in one of a series of mysterious and violent explosions occurring across the country. Struggling with picking up the pieces, she's haunted by the memory of that day and her promise of retribution against those responsible for her misery. But just as she seems to be getting her life back on track, an encounter with a mysterious stranger promises her the vengeance she desires, ultimately turning the former target into the assassin.

However, as she soon learns, all choices come with consequences. And the consequence of her choice threatens to destroy the very fabric of her being.

Sara "Furlong" Burr was born on February 1, 1982, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At an early age, when it became apparent she wouldn't have the luxury of skating through life on her looks or athletic prowess, Sara found her true passion in writing. While in fifth grade, she wrote her first "novel"(whose name escapes her at the moment) about five friends who win a trip to Hawaii. At ninety-something pages, it was her crowning achievement during her childhood (you may now begin drawing your own conclusions on how sad a childhood Sara actually had).

After focusing much of her adult life on her family and career as a paralegal, Sara found the voices in her head becoming unrelenting and she returned to her true passion. Currently, she's working on the sequel to Enigma Black entitled Vendetta Nation. She's also tossing around ideas for a chick-lit book about two ill-fated lovers (Lord, help her).

When she's not writing, Sara enjoys reading (pretty much a given), attempting to garden, shopping (prerequisite to being a woman), and spending time with her family and friends who somehow manage to tolerate her numerous disappearances propagated by infrequent bouts of inspiration.

interview

1.) What was your inspiration to want to become a writer?

Writing always came easy to me. I’ve always liked the whole idea of being able to take people on a journey and make them feel and care about the characters I’ve created. In school, I think I was the only person who got excited when a writing assignment was handed out – yeah, I’m a nerd. After I graduated from high school, I abandoned the whole idea of writing in favor of a “real job”. However, the voices in my head became too demanding over the years, and I finally gave into both them and my dreams and began writing again.

2.) How did you come up with the idea for this book?

I’ve always been a fan of strong female protagonists, superheroes, and dark settings. Dystopian novels have always appealed to me, and I knew that I wanted to create one of my own. I’m also a big fan of tragic love stories, where two characters are torn apart and have to fight their way back to each other. Put all of that together and you have Enigma Black. It’s a story that basically wrote itself.

3.) Did you enjoy writing this book or did you find it complicated after you started?

A little bit of both. Overall, the book was a blast to write -- almost too much of a blast – but it also became a little complicated. I’m one of those people who writes by the seat of their pants, with very little outlining involved. As I’m writing, I often find that the story diverts into new and exciting directions that, sometimes, I didn’t even see coming. When I first began envisioning Enigma Black, I didn’t foresee some of the political aspects that popped up after I began writing it. But in the end, I’m glad they wove their way into the book.

4.) If you could change anything about this book what would it be and why?

Overall, I wouldn’t change anything because changing just one aspect would throw the whole balance of the story off. Granted, there was one decision I made that I thought seriously about changing – agonized over it, even –involving the death of one of the characters. But at the end of the day, I knew it was the right choice, and the fact that I cried while writing it only sealed it that much more for me.

5.) What was your favorite part in writing this book and why?

My favorite part in writing this book was taking an idea that had been swirling around in my head for the last ten years and bringing it to life. Words can’t describe just how amazing it felt when I finished the first draft. It was as though my thoughts finally had a chance to breathe.

6.) Who was your favorite character in this book and why?

Why, all of them, of course. :-) But, if I had to choose, I would have to pick Celaine, the main protagonist. She’s strong, smart, sarcastic, and determined, everything I’ve always wished I was.

7.) Can you give us a little spoiler or a sentence/phrase from your book Enigma Black?

The tagline I like to use is, “Ten years ago she was the target. Now, she’s the assassin.” But if I were to use an actual sentence from Enigma Black, I would probably go with, “Amidst those thunderous blasts and that flash of light, life as I knew it came crashing to an end.”

8.) Is there anything you would like to say to your readers?

First of all, thank you for reading! Without you, Enigma Black, and other indie books like it, would collect dust on the virtual shelves (if they were even published at all in the first place). I truly hope that you enjoy the world and the characters I’ve created and that it and they allow you to escape from reality, if only for a moment.

Thank you so much Sara, for an AMAZING book and for the time you have dedicated to your readers and to this interview! :-)

review

Okay, this books was NOT what I was expecting at ALL!  But it took me by surprise and I felt compelled, sucked in, and wanting to read on and on to find out what happened next in the characters life, and on their journeys!

This book has it all! It's got Sci-fi, Dystopian, Action, Adventure & of course Romance! How could you NOT like anything that has all that in a book & more, I know I couldn't!

The writing and description was great and allowed me to feel as if I could see the world around me through the characters eyes. The pacing kept me on me in the edge and longing for more! This was defentely an action-packed adventure I'm glad I didn't miss!

This book follows the main character, Celaine. Celaine is fierce, angry, and holding a grudge, and she's determined to get revenge. Yet at the same time she is compassionate, caring, loving and defentely loyal to the ones she loves!

When Celaine was seventeen her family was killed. She lost her mother, father and brother in a mysterious explosion that were happening all over the country. She was devastated, lost, & hurt that she was left alone with no family by her side through these dark times. When crazy things were happening all over the world!

About a decade after her family's death Celaine life couldn't be better. Things were hard but she manged to pull herself out of the hard times and start over. She now has a good job, great friends, and wonderful boyfriend who's family treats her like she belongs. Things couldn't be better, that is until a mysterious man comes walking in her life, offering something she's longed for since her family's death. Revenge!  She is ready to avenge her family from the monster that has taken everything from her and others.

And this is where the fun and adventure starts. Celaine has much to learn and much to give up if she is going to pull this off and claim the man responsible for so much death, not just her family, but many others! She has many obstacles and heartaches in this book and the ending ends with a serious cliffhanger!

Overall great story and plot that I enjoyed very much and I can't wait for the sequel!
